Fibromyalgia
Finding definitions of chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia can feel a bit like searching for water in a desert – frustrating, time-consuming and not far off impossible!
The thing is, fibromyalgia is different for everyone, which makes it difficult to pin down an exact definition that will resonate with every sufferer. Coupled with limited medical research into chronic pain conditions, understanding your pain can be a challenge.
As a Chronic Pain and fibromyalgia warrior myself, however, I like to put it like this…
What is Fibromyalgia?
While the intensity and location of the pain may vary from one moment to the next, some form of pain is consistently present, making for a condition that is not only debilitating physically but can feel demoralising and dehumanising mentally.
Fibromyalgia Symptoms
If you’re a fellow Fibro Warrior, you’ll know that the list doesn’t end there!
There are countless symptoms sufferers may experience that can be incredibly difficult to manage.
But fear not! While managing your fibromyalgia may feel challenging, it is by no means impossible
Widespread pain
Increased sensitivity to pain
Extreme tiredness (fatigue)
Muscle stiffness
Difficulty sleeping
Headaches
IBS
Managing your Fibromyalgia
First things first, I won’t lie and say managing fibromyalgia is easy. It isn’t. It requires dedication, persistence and plenty of teeth-gritting determination to beat it at its own game. With no solid understanding of causes or triggers and no discovery of a cure, it’ll be up to you to make sure fibromyalgia only features in your life, rather than controls it.
Sounds daunting, but once you get to grips with pain management, it becomes a natural part of your day-to-day life, and you’ll relish in your ability to self-manage your condition.
For me, managing fibromyalgia is all about trusting my body and responding to its needs in a way that makes the pain bearable. Whether that’s spending some time on my BEMER mat, maintaining a gentle but regular exercise routine or simply (and sometimes frustratingly!) resting – it’s all about doing the right thing for my body, at the right time.
Fibromyalgia is relentless but finding a pain management programme that works for you not only reduces levels of physical pain, but can also aid improvements in mental health and overall life quality.
